Llanddwyn Island Approach

Picture

Position
53°08’N 004°25’W

Approach

From Caernarfon, follow channel to C1/C2 then head directly for S Cardinal buoy off south-west corner. (From Holyhead, pass 1 cable south of buoy). Turn when light tower bears north. Approach anchorage 50 metre off southern Prong and anchor in 5 metres SW of awash rocky patch, or inshore of patch close by Mermaid Cove. To anchor in Mermaid Cove enter mid-channel leaving Ynys-y-Clochedd to starboard and anchor in 1.8 m. in centre of pool.

Dangers

In fresh to strong onshore winds, it is inadvisable to attempt to cross Caernarfon Bar. Rock (awash) 2 cables east of Pilot’s Cove (marked occas. by S. Cardinal). Two rocks (awash) south of islet off Mermaid Cove.

Shelter

Pilots Cove and Mermaid Cove are sheltered from west through north to north-east. A swell makes them uncomfortable in strong south-westerly winds. Fair to good holding on mud and sand.
